Weekend Links

I am on lunch our at edcamp35 as I put all of my links in one place this week.  I'll be writing much more about this fantastic day (and teacher professional development in general) in a post next week.  For now, enjoy some links for your weekend!

Weekend Links : Design

One aspect of early childhood education that has become more and more important to me over the years is design.  The things, the spaces, the sounds: how do those interact in "ideal" early childhood settings?

Check out some design links for your weekend, after the jump!

Rubrics for Play

I'm not much for assessment, especially with very young children.  I think that we can learn a lot about children by being careful observers and facilitators in their work.

That said, this rubric from Play England, via playscapes, helps people who are designing play spaces to think about how they will be used by children.  It promotes thinking that makes each play space unique to its environment and the people who will be using it, encouraging collaborative planning among people rather than a flip through a catalog to find something within budget.

The 10 design principles that the rubric is based on are all about personalization and individuality and inclusion.  Reading through them makes me think that these principles are not only a good way to think about outdoor play, but indoor work spaces as well.

The one where I get up and talk in front of 400 strangers

That was a lot of people, but it was an amazing experience.  And it showed me that I have the ability to get up and do that, which is eye opening for me.

The Pecha Kucha night was really fascinating - there were some amazing presentations.  I'm proud to have been a part of it.

Pecha Kucha nights are done all over the world, and I encourage you to at least go listen to some of the amazing stories people have to tell.  The big map of Pecha Kucha is right here.

I'm beginning to put my images here so that I can share them with you, along with my notes.  I hope to have that up very soon.

And thank you thank you thank you to the people who came out and listened!  It means a lot.

Pecha Kucha

Just a little reminder that I am speaking tomorrow night at Volume 14 of Pecha Kucha here in Brussels.  The line-up is fascinating - I'm looking forward to an inspiring night.

You can see the line up here: http://pechakucha.architempo.net/

and read more about Pecha Kucha around the world here: http://www.pecha-kucha.org/

Once again, I know you are a very North American audience in general, but for any quiet ones out there in Brussels, come on out.  I'm pretty nervous!  I'll be sharing my presentation in the next few days, also.  If there is no video, I'll share my 20 images and my notes.

PechaKucha

I am very excited to be part of PechaKucha Brussels Volume 14, taking place in conjunction with Design September.  I'll be presenting images and words about young children and their relationship with design and their natural, uninhibited desire and ability to create.

I know very few readers are in Belgium, let alone Brussels, but I hope that some of you will be able to come out and listen.  I'll post more information about the other presenters as it becomes available.

You can see a little more information about the event (and past PechaKucha Brussels events) on the website.

Urban Orchard

I love this transformed space in London, created as part of the London Festival of Architecture.  It kind of breaks my heart to know that it is temporary.  It is an interactive, educational place for all ages.  I imagine this working beautifully as part of an urban school campus.

Turtlewings Common

Just a quick note today to mention what I got to do last night -- I spent my evening talking with some wonderful people in the Turtlewings Atelier here in Brussels.

They will be holding a monthly evening called "Turtlewings Common", and it is a time for talk, ideas, projects -- anything that the group wants, really. Besides early childhood professionals, there was also a woman from the European Commission there, and a woman who works as a retail consultant. Such interesting perspectives! As the months go along, it will be wonderful to meet more and more people who are interested in collaborating, especially people from different backgrounds.

If you're in Brussels, you should be there, too!

Outdoor Classroom Links and Inspiration

I have gathered some inspiration for outdoor learning spaces. I just can't stop thinking about the possibilities for ours! Some of my favorite photos cannot be posted here, but you should go visit Imagine School Design for some really lovely photos and inspiration. I love the Auroville Kindergarten in India, especially the gymnasium type room with no walls.

The Pen Green Centre has a sand area that is much more beachy than boxy; and

The Covolo di Pederobba Nursery in Italy has an indoor/outdoor courtyard that would be ideal for meeting and conversing and trying out ideas.

We may not be able to hire architects, but at least we can look and think, and then rearrange a few things in our own spaces and look at the environment in a new light.

As of tomorrow at 3 pm, I am officially on my two week spring break! I'll still be writing and sharing, but a little less frequently due to visitors. But I'll have a special announcement about a giveaway at the beginning of May!

Happy weekend!
